Dating Sites
by Kathryn Vercillo on October 25, 2007
We've talked about the issue of Internet dating scams here on the site before but it's worth bringing up again because it's been widely affecting people across the world a lot in recent months. Basically what's happening is some variation of the same story: two people meet an on online dating site and one ultimately brings up the issue of needing money/ a plane ticket / a visa/ assistance with shipping products. Wanting to believe the best in the other person, the solicited individual tries to help out and ends up with a world of regret - and sometimes some legal complications to go with it.
This doesn't mean that you can't trust people online. It means that you should be cautious and smart about who you make online connections with. Develop a relationship but don't go blindly falling in to love. Jeremy Wagstaff over at LooseWire gave excellent advice on this issue last month:
"Love is always about opening up to other people, and scams are always about money. So the two go well together in online dating. But it also makes for an easy rule to follow: As soon as the issue of money comes up, even if it's after several months of online romance that seems to be going somewhere, pull the plug."
As time goes on, we all learn to balance a healthy level of caution with a healthy level of openness. Work on this with your Online Relationships to protect yourself from scams.

I was just asked for $8000 by a person posing as a construction worker from the US, working in Nigeria. He claims his daughter has stomach cancer...well, I'm not falling for it, and neither should you. If anyone ever asks you for money, run away. Don't give out personal information to people you don't know. Take it slow when getting to know someone on the internet!

I was asked by someone on eharmony, after talking for awhile to allow him to ship products to my office and then forward them to somewhere else. I am very skeptical and was wondering what someone else thought.
PS: He has not asked me for money, just to receive the products and ship them somewhere else.

Watch for so-called Americans working overseas with money in stateside accounts. Recent chatting with NJ "native" working in Nigeria--within a week he was in love-and bringing himself and daughter to OH to visit--oh, no---he was $1400 short for airfare--could I please put off paying my bills and he would pay me the money when he got here? I saw through him the second day but continued until I got his name, address, and the name and address of where he wanted money sent by Western Union or MoneyGram--I hope people are careful and use common sense---

i personally have taken some expertise from jeff paul and honestly speaking i have not found any negative thing about him. I will agree to a point that someone might have not benefited from him but we simply can not deny the fact that there are spill over effects in every industry. my friends even have taken entrepreneurship from him and all of then have benifited from it.
