The latest version of speed dating has a culinary twist. Celebrity chef Danny Boome came up with this new concept of meeting prospective dates during a four-course meal of gourmet dishes he prepared himself.
The first of the series of "Speed Plating" events was held in New York at the quaint bistro known as Tree.
There were 36 participants during the event. Meals were pre-selected online so that during the event, each of the courses just came one new person at a time for a duration of 20 minutes each. There was one general rule for the event, which was that cellphones and pagers were not allowed on the tables.
The first course of asparagus with artichoke hearts infused with saffron aioli and horseradish mayo. For the second course, there was some mystery as one of each pair was asked to wear a pink blindfold and will be fed by the new unknown partner. The mystery dish was spiced-wine pears, tequila marinated lychees, pepper crusted mozzarella and duck pate on a thin crisp.
The third new partner came with the main course which was lamb cutlets with grilled zest polenta and hot fig jus. By the time dessert of lemongrass and ginger panna cotta and chili chocolate dipped strawberries, baked figs and crème fresh arrived, people have started making matches. So that by the 30-minute post meal cocktails, personal information and facebook invites have been given out.
For those who were still a bit more shy had Speed Plate partner site dubbed SpeedDate.com where they may continue getting to know each other better.
The series of 12 Speed Plating events will be held in Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Austin, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Participation fee is $100.
