There was an article in WIRED magazine recently which asked the question: "why are we all still living in high-rent cities when telecommuting options could let us move?" The reality is that despite the fact that we can remotely connect to the workplace, we want our real lives to happen in the urban areas where everything is happening.
This brings us to online dating which the article points out is more effective among people who live in densely populated urban areas. If you live in a small town, it's likely that you've already met the people in your small town and decided that you didn't want to date them. Sure, you could meet someone from a bigger area through the Internet but then you're stuck figuring out how to make an in-person meeting happen. And eventually you're stuck trying to figure out if one of you is going to move to where the other one lives.
Despite this, plenty of people from small towns do use the Internet to meet people. It's just my guess that perhaps the average online dater in an urban area meets more people than the average dater from a smaller town. You have more choices within a close distance from where you live. So while the online dater from a town may meet just as many people online, the number of in-person connections is probably lower.
Question of the Day: What do you think - are just as many people making online matches in small towns or is it more of a city thing?
