Singles at Church

Have you ever met someone at church? In a singles group, or group activity, or even at one of the worship services?

I used to go to a lot of "singles events" at my church. I never dated anyone from there long term, but I did meet a few friends over the years. Our church was very good about ministering to singles. We had a singles group that would meet after the regular service to talk about the challenges of being a single Christian, and what it meant in the plan God had for us.

But I felt that sometimes in church it seemed that many more activities (and sermons) applied more to the challenges of married life and raising a family. Perhaps this was my bias at the time, because now that I am married I no longer feel the sermons shifted in that direction. Perhaps being singles means that you tend to feel "left out" of the majority of society.

I recently read an article that quotes a Census Bureau's survey as saying that "34 percent of Americans ages 15-64 have never been married and 10 percent of the age group is divorced."

The article goes on to talk about how both the church and singles and how they can benefit from targeted interaction. After all, if one of the largest groups in society is single, should we all pay them a little more attention?
