Why is it that some people seem to find the right person right away while others seem to be doomed to pick the losers or their relationships derail before they even get started? No one knows for sure, but Dr. Conner applied some of the proven principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to put together a list of some common mistakes that people make early on in a dating relationship. Any one of these can start you down the wrong path and it isn't unusual to find "Serial Daters" who exhibit many of the mistakes covered in this column. The mistakes individually may not be fatal, but each one increases the risk that things will go awry.
Dr. Conner wrote the top-ten list because she found that over the years an increasing number of her clients' seemed to be serial daters and when their behavior and attitudes towards themselves, dating and the perfect mate were articulated and analyzed certain patterns emerged. In New York, the dating scene if quite frenzied and perhaps tolerance for mistakes is even lower, given the huge dating pool.
Regardless of whether you are exhibiting the exact mistakes covered in the above referenced article or similar repeating patterns, increased self-awareness can help you stay on track and improve your chances of a lasting and fruitful relationship.
