The Idea of Invisible Competition
Filed in archive by Kathryn Vercillo on January 30, 2008

There is an interesting idea making it's way around the blogosphere these days. It's the idea of "invisible competition". What it boils down to is the fact that the prevalence of the Internet and the social networks operating on it creates a situation in which you have far more comptetitors against you than ever before. Furthermore, the idea suggests that not being able to actually deal with your competition face-to-face makes it scarier than when facing competition in the real world.
This theory can apply to almost any aspect of life that is included on the Internet. As it applies to online dating, it basically means that you're now no longer competiting in the dating pool with just the people in your own community. You know have to get the attention of your object of desire when he/she has an entire world of dating possibilities literally at their fingertips.
Of course, there are objections to this theory. One of the main objections is that the Internet also opens up your own possibilities. This means that while you may be competing with more people for the attention of any one person, you also have the ability to put yourself out there to a much larger pool of people which actually broadens your opportunity for making a match.

Question of the Day: Do you feel that competition in the dating pool is too high now that online dating is so common?
