John M. Grohol, Psy.D. has a piece online at the moment over at PsychCentral about the perils of having too many choices.

Marketing from online dating sites often suggests that having more choices is most beneficial, because you have more options from which to choose. But what they don't say is that the more options you have, the more work you have to do to find profiles that actually match what you're looking for.

The simple fact is that the more stuff you have to sort through, the more difficult it become for your brain to decide what's relevant.

Of course, having a lot of choices also means that you spend more time sift through your dating website instead of doing things like, well, actually dating

That is true. Also there is something always missing in the search terms: The style… For example, if you have a fetish for long haired men, you really don’t want to go through all those clean cut men in suits to find that one rough looker out there… But I guess that too has to do with the “make them spend hours here going through profiles one by one” -idea…
