The Barrier: Moving Your Date from Cyberspace to Real Space

The biggest single barrier in online dating is the Internet.

Think about your experience in the past... You find a profile you like. You message the person. They message you back. You exchange a few emails or messages. He or she gives you their cell number. You talk a couple of times. It seems to drag on for a time. You start to talk about actually meeting (you know, physically - in the real world). That discussion drags on (even though he or she seemed warm to the idea. There are some reasons (or excuses) as to why now is not a good time (my goldfish just died and I have to make arrangements with the pet cemetery). Pretty soon the phone calls, emails and messages dry up and your back to looking at profiles...

Cheryl-Anne Jenkinson has a piece that takes a look at some of the reasons why breaking through that barrier is hard. It's worth reading.

Google, on the go for online dating... The Search Engine Weblog

What would first pop up in your mind when you find out that Google is planning to cater to online dating? Plenty of Fish, Match.com Hiss and Spit at Each Other Over Stats

Plenty of Fish, Match.com Hiss and Spit at Each Other Over Stats

Plenty of Fish is now the leading dating site on the web (according to Plenty of Fish). The response from Match.com (which also claims to be the leading dating site on the Web)? Something like "Liar, liar, pants on fire!"

I'm inclined to believe Markus at Plenty of Fish - partly because he posts stats from comScores, Inc., and partly because (as he points out) Match.com has a history of playing fast and loose with numbers, anyway.

The numbers from comScores are interesting. Plenty of Fish sees about twice as many visitors a day as Match.com - 1.2 million for POF to 680 thousand a day for Match.

The hissing and spitting (most of it coming from Match, which is used to being able to say that it's top dog) will be interesting to watch, if it continues. Simple question: Is the era of paid dating sites coming to a close?

Online Dating or a Professional Matchmaker? Some Pros and Cons The Dating Weblog

© baldeaglebluff

I came across an article recently at Suite 101 that compared the pros and cons of online dating services to the pros and cons of a professional matchmaker's services. And (like most things in life) it kind of depends on who you are.

One of the benefits of a matchmaker (according to the piece) is that a professional matchmaker can specialize in a religion or ethnic group. Sure, there are [...] Read More

Video Personals: What's the Hold Up?

Filed in archive Trends on April 12, 2010

Why aren't there more video personals?

Dating Insider took a look at video personals recently. The first hold up seems editorial in nature. How would dating sites monitor what you put in your videos? They don't really trust you (and that's probably a good thing). When you type content and publish it in words, the computer can do the editing. Some crowd sourcing takes place ("flag this article as obnoxiously inappropriate..."). Of course, eventually it will become cost effective for dating sites to use speech-to-text software to simply convert what you say in a video into text. Then the same software that scans what you write for offensive language can scan your videos for offensive language. They'll start out simply deleting your whole video, but then they'll move to cutting the unacceptable parts of it.

The question then becomes, how comfortable are users themselves with video. My guess is that many people are, and many people aren't. But time will change that balance...
